We are aware a local county councillor has started a petition regarding weed in Balderton Lake.

The misinformation in the petition is concerning. Many of the current parish councillors campaigned to preserve the lake for wildlife prior to their election in 2023.

The council has invested in an ecological report to guide the council on how to find a balance between preservation of wildlife, keeping it a safe environment for visitors and balancing this with it being used by the fishermen of Grove Angling Club.

The parish council works with Grove Angling Club, the Environment Agency and other organisations working in our parish to support residents, the angling club and ensure the safety of wildlife and visitors to the lake.

A reminder to everyone that swimming and paddling in the lake is prohibited. New safety equipment has been installed at the lake in case anyone should fall in. The parish council lead on this aspect of the Safer Streets project which brought £150,000 of funding to Balderton.

Options for dealing with weed are under consideration but we are mindful of the nesting birds which are currently on the lake.

Residents and local people on Facebook will no doubt have seen the persistent attempts of a local county councillor to pull down the efforts of Balderton Parish Council. The council has made significant efforts to engage with local residents introducing a newsletter, setting up a Facebook page, consulting with residents and actively encouraging residents to meet with our council through meet and greet sessions in addition to regular open meetings.

We will provide further updates in coming weeks and months. Our website has details of all of our meetings which residents are most welcome to attend. Some of our councillors walk around the lake regularly and are always happy to talk to residents.
